After a the winter I now find that although the machine works very well while it is running. but, when the trigger is released the machine, instead of remaining quiet, begins to makes a pulsing noise as though the motor is switched on and then off. As soon as the trigger is pressed again the pressure is great and the noise and pulsations stop.

You did winterize the machine? Leaving water in a powerwasher will freeze and damage the pump. It's a common happening, because people don't think of it or are not told by the maker.
It is the pump head that will be split... They are prone to crack without frost damage as well. Change the pump head (takes about 1/2 hour) that will cure the fault. The internal parts in this particular Power Craft are the Karcher K3.91M
