Just a thought, but many printers will spit out a configuration page or something else every time the printer is re powered. meaning if the printer keeps loosing power whether unplugged or plugged into an outlet controlled by a light switch. make sure it is plugged into an outlet with constant power. More that likely they are not test pages. Check to make sure that you don't have any switches or software activated for a serial printer. The print you are getting usually indicates a baud mismatch or a corrupted data port.
You did not say what version of windows you are using. The printer needs to have driver software installed and the first thing to do is uninstall that software and then reboot the computer and reinstall it.
