Pro 97 not working
I have a Radio Shack Pro 97 Scanner that I received as a present 1-1/2 years ago. It was working just fine and then suddenly there was no squelch or volume. The keys make noise when pushed, but there is no sound for the squelch or volume. The scanner scans the frequencies but does not stop and play. I went on line and found that other people were having the same problems. I went back to the store that the unit was purchased from and received no help what so ever, they said it’ s off warranty and I was out of luck, nice way to do business??. I think that something that cost as much as this should not be junk after a short period of time. I hope you can help me with this problem I do like radio shack, but I can’t afford to buy items that don’t stand up.
Sincerely
Greg Stevens

If you have NO volume, and the squelch will not open up, the antenna is NOT the problem. Even with no antenna connected you will still hear white noise when the squelch is opened. The most common audio problem on this type of equipment is the failure of the shorting bar to make contact on the earphone plug. This is the spring clip that disconnects the internal speaker when you plug in an external speaker.
A quick check by plugging in an external speaker that is known to be good. If sound returns, that is the problem.
On the contrary, if it scans and does not stop on a known signal, like the weather channel that is broadcast 24/7, that could be a antenna problem.
Sounds like two different issues.
This is just a guess but sounds like your antenna connection (inside the unit) has broken. If you use the antenna as a handle it will eventually break. Radio Shack will repair it for a flat fee of $40 (that was the price the last time I checked) plus shipping. Or if you are really good at soldering and have good eye sight, you can repair it your self.
Your local radioshack should be able to send it in for repair.
