This is a DLP projector. In it the image is generated this way: a bulb makes the light (a fan cools it); the light is projected on a circuit with a million tiny mirrors on it - each can be tilted individually so tilting them one at a time a black/white image is generated; this image is passed thru a wheel tha has colored screens on it that turn - the color is put on the image; that final image is projected on the screen. You hear a roaring sound because a rotating part is failing. If you're lucky it's the fan and replacing it will cost you $5 plus the labor - simple but if you have never done this before don't try it, it's fiddly, leave it to a pro. If your unlucky it's the wheel and in that case it's going to be very expensive - only the wheel itself will cost you at least $200. Including the very complicated job of completely dismantling the projector, replacing the wheel, putting it all back together and realigning all of them optically it will cost you more than $500. Ask a quote before accepting the repair, you might find out that it will be cheaper just to get another one.
