You have the change the belt yearly even if it isn't broken? I will try that 1st b/c if it needs a new motor it is trash! THANKS!

The belt looses it tensile strength (tightness) over time. But it's the part about funny sounds and shutting down that concerns me. If it smells like a tire fire then it's the belt if it smells like plastic and burned hair then the motor has a bad field or armature. Probably one of the carbon brushes got hung up and burned a segment in the armature.
