I had the same problem with my AKAI factory remote controller. The controller would light up when buttons were pushed, but had no effect on the TV itself. I fixed it by re-connecting the infrared connector to the back of the tv (small wire that originates from the TV itself, and then plugs back into the TV above the component inputs). Now it works great again.
Is it a multi-device remote at all? This set is probably a rebranded Samsung so you might try their codes or check Samsung's website for a code listing for that model.

Every now and then, I break my pick.
Samsung will NOT recognize the Akai model number and and additionally has no link leading to a code list for anything.
Akai has NO customer support for any products, regardless of origins.
For a Japanese manufacturer, they are the thinnest of any I've seen.
