Replace the handle release pedal on an Eureka Boss Smartvac,
I have an older Eureka SmartVac and the handle release pedal broke. I ordered a new one, part number 70042. I can figure out most things, but either I'm missing something here, or I'm having a brain fart...
I can't find the manual but i don't think the manual would help me much with this problem anyway. I've been holding the handle upright with a bungee cord, but that doesn't work well enough when I go to clean the throw rugs.
Help, please,
Barb Stout

Bassially, uyou have to take it apart and replace the broken with the new. Im asuming you have taken it apart already and tried putting it in. Now, in order for it to lock in place to keep it standing upright, there is a spring or a metal clip ( 17 in diagram from above user refered to as the handle release spring) that locks in place when you push it up and pressing the petal depresses it and allows you to tilt it down.
Now is it stuck up and locked or is it falling down and not locking upright?
If its not lcoking upright, there may be damage or broken plastic wher the metal clip or spring go in and allthough you replaced the parts, the casing itself is damaged and isnt holding the handle lock spring is proper position and falls out of place after you put it together, in which case your out of luck, unless you can fix it with ingenuity and some strong apoxy. You could try using some automotive appoxy to glue the metal spring in place, wait a few hours to dry and then re-asemble and hope that it holds.
Im guessing it probably broke when someone tryed to pull it down without pressing the release petal and snapped the plastic that holds the metal spring in place. just a guess.
well good luck.
Hello. Are there any deep screw holes underneath it? This is the way I took apart my Oreck.
Let me know if you can't find anything and we can try something else.
Hi and welcome to FixYa,
- flat metal tab that serve as spring P/N 70043;
- the the grooves and latch indentation that the handle release locks on, they may be worn out.
Additionally, an exploded parts diagram might be of more assistance to you.

Just a start, do postback how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and Thank you for using FixYa.
Hi again,
Any updates or developments so far?
Obscure question for the win. Sorry to hear about your troubles but bravo for taking the incentive to fix it yourself rather than sending it to a repair shop. It took a bit of searching, but I found the repair schematics for your model vacuum.
Schematics in a PDF
Note: The handle release is labeled in the schematics as part number 16 on the first page.
Hope this helps!

The Eureka Boss SmartVac 4870GZ upright vacuum is a powerful performer with an attractive price tag. It has several extra features and it tackles pet hair with ease -- all for about half the price of its competitors.
This hard-working vacuum easily cleaned carpets of various heights in our tests. Thanks to a brush on/off option, it also can be used on hard surfaces, like wood or tile floors. The option to turn off the rotating brushes on the vacuum head works well with delicate area rugs. It's also a good idea to turn off the rotating brushes when using attachments so they don't excessively clean one area of the carpet.
One distinct advantage of the Eureka Boss SmartVac is the PowerPaw attachment. This mini-turbo is a 5.5-inch brush roll that increases the amount of dirt and dust that is picked up; it is ideal for cleaning stairs. The SmartVac 4870GZ uses a collection bag and comes equipped with a sealed HEPA filter. The filter is relatively easy to change, and will need to be replaced about twice a year (more often if you are battling heavily soiled carpets). The costs of HEPA filters are about $20 each, so plan on figuring this expense into your operating costs.
We especially like the SmartVac's brushview window. By looking through this clear window covering, you can actually see the dirt being removed from your carpet. This Eureka model is meant for serious cleaning, and it makes us feel better when we can see all the pet hair it picks up zipping through the hose. Plus, if the hose ever clogs, we'll be able to see that, too. As with most vacuums we test, we wish the hose had a longer reach. Its accordion design is particularly unwieldy at first, but does offer a bit more flexibility with extended use.
This model has a few details that really make a difference. Its 30-foot power cord gives plenty of room to vacuum from room to room without moving the cord to various outlets. It has helpful onboard accessories, including two nesting wands, a crevice tool, dusting brush and upholstery tool, as well as the PowerPaw tool.
