Reverse acts as neutral. (auto tranny)
1988 lxi wont move in reverse, acts as if itwas in neutral. I understand its a transmission problem,however, it still drives fine, i am on a tight budget, point being, how long can i get away without rebuiling/replacing thetranny.
It makes a slight grinding noise from park to drive, however, shifting between reverse, 2,3,d it is fine.

It is hard to say, but as long as all of the forward gears work fine, then it might work for a long time. But without knowing what is wrong, I would at least change the fluid to remove as much metal or clutch material as you can. Don't worry about the filter, you can't change it without disassembling the trans. Just drain the fluid and refill it. This won't fix reverse, but it might prolong further problems. And don't park where you can't pull straight out.
