Reverse button on sewing machine no longer working

The reverse button on my Janome Mystyle 16 manual sewing machine is not working - nothing appears to have happened - it's just no longer doing any reverse stitches.
I had loaned my machine to a friend and they said it was working fine while they had it.
I'm pretty handy with a screw driver and was hoping maybe someone would know if this is something I could repair myself?
