an engine requires fuel - air - ignition and compression......
if your engine starts and runs then it must have reasonable compression so check / replace / clean the fuel and air filters... check the condition of the spark plug / clean it / replace it
after these basic checks you move onto measuring the compression and checking the carburettor which requires a level of skill you may not have
