Yes, this is known issue and if your bumper moves freely, you might be facing a sensor fault caused by poor quality of components. Here is a guide to fix it http://www.schneordesign.com/Avi/irobot/roomba_mod2.htm Have fun Avi

The bump switch may still be making contact or the wheel drop sensors (left, right, and caster) can also cause this behavior. Its also possible for a sensor to become defective in whcih case cleaning won't fix it.
avi_4sale - it isn't supposed to on the 500 series, only the 400, but iRobot self diagnostics aren't the best when confronted with intermittent or multiple failures. BTW the iRoboot site and phone support are probably more useful to the average consumer than someone who trying to peddle them parts they can't hope to install at $10 for a part even Jameco sells for $0.19. If a consumer has the skills to disassemble the Roomba and do the soldering to replace an IR sensor, they aren't posting messages on FixYa asking what 9 beeps means.avi_4sale - it isn't supposed to on the 500 series, only the 400, but iRobot self diagnostics aren't the best when confronted with intermittent or multiple failures. Brian, read my manual, it has a test explained in the start ;-)

Oliver, 9 beep has nothing to do with drop sensors ;-( RTFM
