THERMOSTAT, inside or underneath the temperature control. If the heater does overheat, the temperature/ pressure valve on the side of the heater will leak or spew water. This is so that the water heater does not explode. It is far more common for the valve itself to go bad.than the thermostat. The temperature/ pressure valve is a common replacement part. The thermostat is not available as a replacement part on most tanks.
