I kind of have the same problem, this only works temporarily but, take out your ice holder, take out all the ice and place it it a bag, Once you have done that check if everything is in place, if something is not, unscrew the cover, and put it back in place. put everything back and try it out again. This should work for about a week or so.
I'm not sure what model Kenmore (Whirlpool) I have but I just fixed the problem. Start by pulling the power plug. Next I removed the bottom water tray. This exposed 2 screws, remove them. Then you can lift the front cover up. I saw the plastic pegs that hold the dispenser switch had broken off. At this point you can order a replacement piece with new pegs, or carefully drill 2 holes where the pegs were. I then found some long #4 screws which I used to replace the pegs. Washer on the screw, screw through the hole from the outside, spacer, switch and nuts. Didn't have enough room for lockwashers, so I painted the screwheads and nuts with fingernail polish to lock them.
Seems like everyone has the same problem, have to take a screw driver and be careful taking the front cover off, it is possible the micro switch could be bad or not making contact somehow. that is my guess. good luck. you can call v and v appliance parts ask for tom 330-743-7300 give model # and he can guide you over the phone and actually give you some good advice on working on it.
