The non return valve that is installed at the lip of the outlet from the unit has been jammed open. Usually it gets jammed with residue and or a build up of sludge. This permits a backflow of the pumped water back into the unit. It pumps it again and within a few seconds the waste/water flows back into the unit. Open it up (the outlet pipe) and clean it making sure the non return valve (it is a rubber hinged cap) moves freely.
I should have mentioned that in the diagram Items 21a and 21b make up the non-return valve. It will make sense once you disconnect the main outlet and see the parts. Be careful, there will be water/waste in the outlet pipe so be prepared with a small bucket and paper towels.I should have mentioned that in the diagram Items 21a and 21b make up the non-return valve.
