In general, for multi-function printers, the unit must be in a ready to print state. (Out of ink messages will stop the unit from scanning.) Next the full software package should be installed before connecting the USB cable, if that is used. If the OS finds the drivers, you may only get the printer drivers.
Next two-way communication must be allowed. For a USB cable, don't use a cable longer than 6' and replace it if there is a communication error. You need to enter the Properties section for the printer. Then go to the Set Scan Button tab and use the Available Applications list to move the desired applications to the Front Panel Scan Destination. You should also set the file type here. In the Scan Property section, set the default destination for scanned images, the standard resolution, and other items. Also make sure to set the type of connect in the Change Port tab.
