Had this problem on a Philips 170X6 display. When switching on the LCD lighted a few seconds and then went dark. Other displays may have similar problems. Cause= bad electrolytic capacitors in the power supply. Had to replace 4 x 470 µF/25V and 1 x 125 µF/25V. (in many cases you will see trace of leakage or a bulged top) Access is by removing 3 screws on the back and pulling of the front frame (which fits very tight). Then you can lift out the LCD and you will find the power supply on the back of it. Carefull, the mains section can have high voltages.
