Screen is black but pointer is still lit
I turned it on as usual and there is nothing on the screen - it still beeps and you can see the pointer but nothing else - I've dropped it several times and just replaced the batteries with fresh ones but nothing - is it dead or is it fixable?

Yes. I know exactly how to fix this because I had the same problem. Most likely what happened was the ribbon that attaches your screen to the motherboard has gotten loose or fallen off. All you need to do is remove the small screw (the only screw) on the back near where you remove the batteries. Then pop off the top rubber part on the front. Now you can pull the entire center piece out from the plastic case and you will see two ribbons. Make sure each one is secure to the motherboard. Put everything back in the casing, put the screw back in and it should work. It worked for me.
I also had the same problem. The black plastic ribbon appeared to be connected to the white plastic connector on the motherboard but it was actually just resting against it. It had slipped out. It took me a while to realise it was loose so followed the tips and wiggled it back in with my wife's tweezers! Thanks for the great help. I'd actually just bought it off eBay and was cursing the seller until I found your tip.
Bill W was right on the moneyh and just saved me $400. the ribbon(just the little plastic ribbon) had come dislodged fromt he white thing on the motherboard. I took a pair of large forceps and CAREFULLY wiggled it back in place....Thanks dude, I was so pissed.
