seal in the tank cap. bionaire no longer makes the model and stocks no replacement parts. I can't find anyone who does. any suggestions for how to replace the seal with something from a hardware outlet or ?????? I hate to throw the whole thing out because of a 10cent bit of rubber

Hey wait! Don't throw it away. All you need to do is go to an automotive store like NAPA or Auto Zone and get yourself some 'gasket material' and make a new gasket. Maybe you can use the old one as a template to cut a new one for the humidifier. Carefully take the old one of the cap and lay it on the gasket material and trace the old one on to the meaterial, then cut it out and put it on the cap. Maybe a light coat of silicone calking underneath to help hold it.

Try home depo or a supply outlet I am sure there is a compromise here do not give up you did stop in the right spot here at fixya.com.
check Ebay for anyone that is saling this unit for parts you never know
check your hardware stores bring the old part to them.
You can also have one made bealeave it or not there are people that can make these rubber seals.
