The mode switch would not cause an overly hard shift. it may make it more firm, but not harsh. i would check the fluid level, and depending on the age of the vehicle could be the modulator valve. if the fluid level is good and everything else seems ok, a professional flush may fix the problem too if there are any restrictions in a shift accumulator or channel. good luck!
