shower faucet that leaks out the spout when turned off. I removed the knob and there seems to be a plastic part that surrounds the stem and may also serve as a retainer. Does anyone know how to remove and service this stem?

Im sorry i dont know how to explain step by step what you have to do but i know what you are talking about and its called a diverter. they get stripped out and thats why the spout leaks. they are not difficult to replace depending on the model but some of them have to be sweat apart with a b-tank.
