shred" light comes on, rather than the red "reverse" light. Is there something I can do to fix this? The motor etc. runs and sounds great and the gears turn smoothly so I hate to throw it away. I have the same problem as logged above - what's the solution?

The first thing that comes to mind is that the switch is faulty and that one of the contacts has come loose and is shorting across the reverse contacts. There is little else that can go wrong with a shredder, so in this case try replacing the switch.
