Shut down prematurely
I have a Gateway DC-M40 camera. When I turn the camera on and take a picture, the camera shuts itself down and does not take the picture. The battery icon is showing about half. I also tried selecting the menu and looking to change something - it will also shut itself down before it will reset anything. When I first powered it up, the lens itself would not open and it had a grinding noise trying to go in and out, that has stopped. The last time I used it was about a week ago and it worked fine then, nothing has happened as far as possible injury to the camera between then and now.

It turns out that the problem was the batteries. I put some good ones that I had in the camera and it started working just fine. Even though the others were showing that they at least partially working, maybe just not enough juice to really work. Anyway, with just about any problem - try new batteries first and see if there is any change or improvement.
