Smoking pc part 2
I just received an answer to this that mobo is fried. can i salvage the cpu as it cost me $750 and the ddr ram was also expensive?
i have a pc i put together that has an asus sk8v mobo and ddr 3200 ram w/ a amd athlon 64 fx 53 cpu an assistant tried to add on to the 1gig ram and shifted the ddr ram to other slots and put in ddr2 ram (i am still trying to find him to #$*&*&%$# him!) upon reboot the fans came on but nothing on monitor and he reporting the smell of smoke promptly shutting it down everything was put back as before but it won't respond except for fans
can't tell what caused the smoke any suggestions as to what is ruined?

If the fan comes on then the power supply might be OK but test the power supply with a multi-meter and check the 12 volt and 5 volt supply, the voltages should be within 5%
The CPU and RAM maybe be OK but you won't know unless you can test them in another motherboard or computer.
There is no way I can tell you what has caused the problem without looking at the motherboard and components, It could be anything from a faulty power supply to a component fault on the motherboard. You need to examine the motherboard closely to see what components are burnt. My guess is the capacitors in the power supply has blown and caused the smoke. I have had fixed a couple of computers with this problem and on both of these the computers the CPU and RAM were OK.
But I could not guarantee your will be the same.
Absolutely. I'm assuming since you put it together you can also take it apart. (and yes, sorry to say i'm the one who told you it was fried.)
Be sure when you pull off the CPU fan that you disconnect if from the motherboard, then give it a very (very, VERY - just to loosen up the thermal paste) gentle twist back and forth to loosen it up, then lift it off.
Unfortunately i think you were using the original FX64 CPU in a socket 940 mobo, so you will have a hard time finding a new mobo (like, hard as in impossible). The good news is....eBay..... there's a bunch of your exact mobo on there.
good luck, and beat your intern/assistant or whatever about the face and neck for attempting to make an upgrade to your computer.
Well since it's a server mobo that was fried it's not as easy to find, but i just did an ebay search and found 18 results.... search "socket 940 motherboard"
