It sounds like you inadvertently tapped into the power line behind the headlight switch. I would find another source for power. If you have access to the fuse panel, find a circuit that is only energized when the ignition key is turned on. Be careful not to tap into an "always on" source, or you will be draining your battery if you forget to turn off the stereo.
