Sound pans back and forth, overall quality not great

I bought a Rode video shotgun mic for my canon 5d mark ii and to be honest it hasnt really ever been used as its just sat around for about 8 months. Recently I tried to use it and decided to do some test shots but noticed regardless of which option it is on, the audio jumps from left to right and has trouble coming out of both speakers...
Is this something I am doing wrong? or is it possibly just damaged as it just sat around not in the best care?
