The protection mode has kicked in because there is a load on the outputs. Turn the receiver off, now dis-connect speaker wires from the back, power on and turn the volume right down, if the word protect stays off, it indicates a short in the wires or one or more speakers. However, if the word protect comes back on "with speakers and wires dis-connected" it means there is a short in one or more of the audio output ic's in the receiver. A technician will be needed to see how much work needs to be done with an estimate.
It sounds like you have some wires that are touching cause the reciever to protect itself. Go over and check all wiring and make sure you have nothing touching. Unplug device while you are doing this and then when done plug back up and see if that fixed issue.
