Speedometer died on 98 Outback Legacy
I have a 98 Outback Legacy with 205,000 miles. Last week while driving, the speedometer started acting erratic (dropping from my speed of 65 down to 40) and slowly died over about a 5 minute period. Shortly thereafter, the check engine light came on. Everything else seems to be running fine. I'm not sure whether I need to take it to the dealer, or is this something I can possibly fix myself?

If you know what you are looking for, it is the speedometer cable. if you have a mechanical odometer, then it is just the cable that is connected in your instrument panel and connected to your transmission.
if you can replace that cable then that would solve your problem.
if you have an electronic odometer , then you have to find your sending unit which is also located in your transmission. but it would be more complicated to test if it is defective.
