Squealing noise from the right side of the machine when begin sewing
When I begin to sew, the machine is sluggish and then there is a squealing sound from the right side of the machine. Perhaps the belt is slipping or something else (bearings?) needs work. This is a mechanical New Home Model 640. Any suggestions of things I can try myself or do I need to take it to a repair shop?

Sounds like it needs to be cleaned. check the belt first.
The machine will need cleaning. The belt You can't clean. If bad it will need to be replaced.
glad that worked out for You. Hopefully that was all. mission accomplished
