How deep was the water? If it was above mid way on the motor, you probably got water in the cylinders. You also may have gotten water under the distributor cap. remove a spark plug and have a helper turn over the motor as you watch for spitting from the spark plug hole. Check the spark plugs closest to the back of the truck. I hope there was no water in the cylinders - if there is spitting, you may have bent a valve - or worse! If no spitting, get some wire dryer spray from your local auto parts store, remove the distributor cap, and liberally spray the inside of the cap and the rotor, as well as they distributor plate and assembly. Give it 30 mins or so to dry out and replace cap, then try starting. If no starting, remove a spark plug and wire. Put the wire on the plug and hold with some INSULATED pliers, holding the electrode end of the plug on the engine. Have a helper start the motor and watch for a BLUE spark from the plug. If the spark is yellow or orange, you don't have enough power to run the motor and may have a faulty coil or coilpack. Hope this helps and thanks for using Fixya!!
When you say spitting what does that mean? So I remove an actual spark plug, not just the electrical cap? So then I'm looking in the engine is what you're saying. And then by turning the starter if any water is in there it should slosh out of the spark plug hole? The wire dry pack, are you talking about just a can of air? When you say spitting what does that mean? So I remove an actual spark plug, not just the electrical cap? What I meant by spitting is there would be vapor and/ ordroplets coming out. Yes, you'll need to remove the sparkplug itself and watch the sparkplug hole to see if either of the pre-mentioned substances come out. The wire dryer spray is not just air. It ois a chemical solution ( I suppose it has some Ether in it) that displaces all moisture. 1 drop of water in the cap or rotor will keep it from firing correctly. The wire dryer spray also has some type of cleaning agent in it to displace minor grease and dirt deposits too. I've used it many times, with desired results immediately - although twice I wound up needing to replace the cap and rotor. What I meant by spitting is there would be vapor and/ ordroplets coming out. Ok. MOre info please. Does it turn over when the key is turned? IF so, the wiring may have been messed up or the computer chip could have been shorted. No work-around here...replace parts until it starts!!
