Starter --- I found it, replaced it hooked the three terminals back on. When I started the car, got nothing and battery started to smoke. Did I reverse the polartity?

Sounds like it. scrap that battery,and be thankful it didnt explode. reverse the starter wiring,and trywith a new or borrowed battery.
