Lets do the easy cheap quick stuff first. Some have a low oil sensor on the engine that will interrupt the spark if it detects low oil so make sure it is full to the mark. The spark plug does go bad so try a new one. Then it gets harder from there, under the fan shroud that covers the flywheel is a ignition module , there will be spark plug wire or two and one small wire plugged onto it, unplug it, this will separate all the safety switches that could be the problem from the engine. NOTE it will not shut off with the key until you plug it back on. Put the shroud back on and try it again. If it stills quits and has no spark I would change the ignition module. If it does not quit it is one of the safety switch. The little wire on the module is connected to the ground through the safety switches to stop the spark and is what shuts it off when one of them are not satisfied.
I am glad to hear that Bob, I started working on mowers when they started with a rope wrapped around a bell pulley and you shut them off by pushing a flat tap off steel against the spark plug.We had points and condensers to fight with every spring. Today is different but not easier, today we have alcohol fuel , safety switches and relays to keep us busy. Sounds like you have the gift to fixs mowers. Keep up the good work.RickI am glad to hear that Bob, I started working on mowers when they started with a rope wrapped around a bell pulley and you shut them off by pushing a flat tap off steel against the spark plug.We had points and condensers to fight with every spring.
