Check bulbs and fuse first than test your brake light switch .usually the vehicle cant be taken out of gear if fuse or switch are bad. The best way of testing would be with a 12 volt test light. The light can be bought at any auto parts store under $20.00. Hook one end of light to ground (metal unpainted on truck) touch the other end on fuse touch metal connection on both sides of fuse (one side at a time )with key on . Test light should light . if it only lights on one side the fuse is blown and will need to be replaced. If all is good remove tail light bulbs. have someone sit in truck with key turned to on. Ground the test light and touch the point of test light to conection in bulb recepticle on truck it should light on one side when brakes are pushed .there are 2 metal connections in resepticle the other one is running lights. test with lights on. one should light up for sure. if the test light lights with both all is good bulbs are for sure bad. if this was helpful please leave good feed back
