Strange flame on versa raypak
My pilot light went out on the pool heater (in the wind, presumably), went to light it and there is a large orange flame, burning something white- like insulation, but not really burning off. Also a liquid is pooling underneath the unit. Seems to be working otherwise. Should I call a technician in?

Part of your fire tile (white like) has fallen into your pilot area and is messing with the gas/air mix. Cleaning it out should clear the pilot and have it return to a nice blue flame. If you can get a look inside the unit from a mirror to be sure the area of tile damage is minimal you should be ok. Of course to be on the same side you may want to call in a heater tech to tear it down and be sure the fire box is still sound.
The fire tile is a simptom of the problem but the water you find in the heater is what causes this problem. The tile get's wet and when you add heat it causes the water to expand and break the tile. So that will get worse. This is also simptom. You may have a problem with your heat exchanger or your venting on the heater. These can be caused by air supply or chemical problems. Good luck.
