Hello all - many thanks for your responses. I have to say that I have now sent the game back to Amazon. The issue were just too many for a "silver surfer" to cope with. The disks arrived with surface marks because the mounting stud had broken in the mail. The game was only offered as being compatible with Windows XP, but in the accompanying notes it was highlighted that there could be issues if running with XP! I tried all the back-compatibility work-arounds suggested by the publisher and none worked. The result was always that whilst the fairly stable aircraft instrument panel rendered OK, the view out of the cockpit was absolute rubbish. Then on one attempt I noted that when Disk 2 was inserted, it was shown as actually being Disk 3 on my taskbar! A double check using the disk labelled as Disk 3 displayed it as being Disk 2! It had to go back - all I wanted was a fairly strightforward flight sim game for my grandson to play. I have IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles loaded and it is quite complex for a 7-year old, so when the lad gets frustrated at his lack of success, he goes into a frenzy of deliberate crashes crashes to work it off. As well as the game-play, I was hoping to interest him in the ethos of the computer being "the servant of the man" and not the other way around, as he is denied access at home due to the feeling that computing at his age is all about "mindless" gaming and not good for his mental development. If you have any suggestions for a straightforward flight sim where learning to fly, taking off, making a flight and then landing back at your home airport, I would be delighted to hear.
