Tascam 2488 won't light up or boot
I turned off my 2488 after laying down some drum tracks then came back about an hour later and turned it back on. The display would not light up none of the panel lights lit up. I heard the CD burner engage and could hear the hard drive searching for a moment but not the usual start up noises. After about 30-40 seconds I could hear the mics kick in through the headphones. I had no control of any function with the buttons. I tried restarting it several times. At this point I can still hear the CD burner engage when starting I can feel the hard drive spinning but it does not make any searching sounds. I tried two different hard boot as described in this forum but the buttons on the tascam are not working. I reseated all the connections I could get to removing the back cover (warranty long over) and it made no difference.

Sounds like the hard drive may have succumbed to the effects of vibrations during the tracking of the drums and the drives heads are either frozen or damaged. You could try removing the drive and swinging it around to try to free up the heads. Don't use any impact, just kind of swing it like you would a baby. Sounds silly I know, but I've seen IBM techs do this successfully with stuck heads on server hard drives before.
Otherwise you might be looking at a new hard disk which unfortunately could mean losing all of your data. If that is the case, you may be able to get a computer shop to recover the contents of the damaged drive and save it for you.
Best of luck with this.
