Are you saying the aperture numbers are not being displayed on the camera LCD or view finder? If so it depends lens and camera. Some cameras and lens connect, but do not an electrical connection. Some of the newer Nikon cameras are not designed to work with some lens. Now, if that lens works on another camera of the same type then the camera needs repair. Sometimes cleaning the contact at the opening of the lens mount does the trick.
