The belt in my 01 Dodge Dakota squeals badly. Started when I had my power steering pump replaced. I tried changing the belt and the tensioner, but still squeals. Is it possible the pulley on the power steering pump was reattached incorrectly? It looks fine and I see no vibration. The squeal seems to be from the tensioner side, opposite side from the power steering pump
THE MOST COMMON PROBLEM THAT CAUSE BELT SQUEAL IS THAT THE POWER STEERING PULLEY ( GM SAGINAW DESIGN PUMP IS USED ON THIS YEAR) WHICH IS A PRESS ON ASSEMBLY IS NOT CORREECLY POSITINED ON THE POWER STEERING PUMP SHAFT, THIS CAUSES THE BELT TO RUN OFF CENTER. YOU NEED A SPECIAL PULLER TO INSTALL AND REMOVE THE PULLEY SO THE BEST THING TO DO IS HAVE THE SHOP THAT INSTALLED THE PUMP RECHECK THE PULLEY POSITION, I WILL BET IT IS OUT OF ALIGNMENT
Glad to help. Who ever did the work and it was work you paid to have done should go back to mechanics school and learn how to properly install a power steering pulley to prevent belt noise.Glad to help. It is not necessary to remove the pump, but you will need this tool to move the pulley out or in.
Go to the link to see the tool and the cost.
