The car is no longer going in reverse but going forward is no problem. is this something that can only be fixed by overhauling the transmission?

Yes!!! basically the reverse gear is shot or the clutches holding it in place are worn.. but first check your gear shifter cabe and ensure its tight!!! a broken / loose cable can also cause this or the bushins in the shifter as well.
