The cleaning led came on. After cleaning the blades, it remains on... Is there something else that I need to clean to get the led to go off and have the unit resume operation?

Try shaking it back and forth with it upside down. We frequently have to use an air hose and blow the insides out. If the wires have a build up on them the LED light continues to show. You can also (very gently wipe down the wires.
