The computer tells me that the scanner is not connected. The USB connection is OK because I have used another with the same result. I have just reinstalled windows, and have reinstalled the A3 Scanjet software several times to no avail
Type of scanner can use another connection besides USB? what version of Windows? was working before?
Hi, I'll try to help you get your scanner working. First, can you provide a little more information?
- What type of scanner is it? - What version of Windows are you running? - Was the scanner working before you reinstalled Windows? - Is the scanner capable of using another connection besides USB, or is that it?
The scanner now connects. However, there is a mechanical whirring noise (not the normal one) and the image is a series of rainbow vertical lines and black. I suspect it is stuffed (I tried Photoshop and Word with the OCR facility) - am I right? And if so where in Melbourne can I get it repaired?

It sounds like the carriage or the motor has gone bad, causing the noise and the faulty image. I'm not sure where in Melbourne you can get it repaired, but those scanners are typically just as cheap to replace as they are to repair, and they can sometimes take a while to get repaired. You're probably better off just getting a new scanner rather than dealing with the hassle of finding someone to repair this one and making sure it is done right. New scanners aren't typically more expensive, and you can probably get one with more features and better performance than your current scanner. It sounds like the carriage or the motor has gone bad, causing the noise and the faulty image.
