Revision: If the batteries stack on top of each other, they have to all go in the same direction. Be sure the flat backs are in the direction toward the spring. The protrusion on the other end of the battery will face away from the spring. End revision.
It is very common to use the following method.
Look into the compartment and you will see a spring where each battery goes. Place the battery's flat bottom against the spring. Put the compartment cover back on and test your scale. If the batteries are good and the scale works it should be ready for you to use once again.
