The controller was getting very hot. When I got home I removed the top to find the -battery wire insulation melted into the strands of wire. I cut the wire back a couple of inches to clean wire as well as the + wire to match length and installed new clips. I put the red positive the it's terminal and the black negative to it's terminal and now it runs backwards. I double checked the wiring. Was it wired wrong from the beginning to compensate for lower end wiring?

It is possible that the wires were reversed on the plate that holds the brushes. Since the motor is running backwards, the polarity is reversed and must be corrected for the motor to run correctly.

It doesn't really matter whether you reverse the wires at the top, or at the bottom, as long as they are the correct polarity. Here is an assembly diagram, just in case:http://www.profisherman.com/minnkota/min...It doesn't really matter whether you reverse the wires at the top, or at the bottom, as long as they are the correct polarity.
