The desktop will not boot. When powered on, the fans start, and the optical drive cycles repeatedly. Nothing on display - light on display stays yellow. I have tried unplugging rhe CD drive. No dice. I have tried unplugging the hard drive. Still nothing. It seems as though it is not getting far enough to notice the keyboard either. Lights on keyboard do not flash. I am concerned that the mother board is toast. no foul smell coming from machine. How can I test the motherboard?

Bios is checking to see if the components are recognised.. usually keyboard is "seen" first. I have to concurr with you that given the things you mention, the mobo is indeed toast, especially as there are no beeps on boot up that would indicate a specific error
