Modding the echo board could be done by changing the value of a component, either a resistor or a capacitor other than the TIME and/or ECHO variable controls.
The only way to check would be to compare the component values against factory specified values. Sorry, it has to be an on-site diagnosis. Perhaps the schematic diagram of the echo board would help.
