The light in my scanner ( microtek scan maker 9800xl ) first began to emit a burning scent and then it just went out. Where can I get a new light for it? How is it installed?

I don't think you'll be able to do it yourself. better take it to a nearby authorized service center and they'll do it for you. As for the burning smell, it looks like a short circuit withing the scanner (not necessarily a blown scanner light). One can't say at this point until it is opened up and checked thoroughly.
