THE MACHINE PUMPS BUT SPINS VERY SLOWLY, WHILE EMPTY. I DON'T THINK IT SPINS AT ALL WITH LAUNDRY IN IT. THE BELT IS NOT BROKEN. IT HAS TWICE SMELLED HOT AT THE END OF THE CYCLE. THE FIRST TIME IT SEEMED TO RECOVER AND WORK OK FOR SEVERAL WEEKS. THIS TIME IT HAS NOT GOTTEN ANY BETTER

That would be the tub or agitator bearings. You will have to remove the side panels to access the bearings and the coupler that covers them. Then you will have to lift up tub and agitator to access them so you can change them out.
