The needle of my sewing machine hits against metal on every fourth turn both forwards and backwards. If I push it, the needle breaks. What should I do?
I've taken it largely apart so I can see where the needle hits the metal piece that holds the bobbin. Seems somehow that the spaces in that metal round piece are off. Can't figure out why it would be so periodic yet regular in how the needle hits. Also can't figure out how it would have gotten this way on its own.

One of the most common problems is a bent needle. But, if yours breaks, then maybe you aren't putting it up into the holder all the way. It really won't break the bobbin holder if it's made of metal. So, when you put your new needle in, make sure the flat side is facing the right way (another common mistake) by looking into your manual to check which way is correct. Then, when you are putting it into the holder, be sure the holding screw is as far out as it can be and wiggle the needle as you're sliding it up. Keep sliding and wiggling until you can't slide and wiggle any more. Then, hand tighten the screw and finish tightening it with a screw driver. That should do it. Also, make sure you are using the correct needle for your machine. There are many different type, but not all fit every machine. Good luck!
