The nut that attaches to the heating element keeps cracking in half allowing water to leak on the floor. Does anyone know what might cause this problem. Thank you in Advance for your Help

That usually happens when the material the "Nut" is made from is iron, steel, usually it should be brass or some other non ferrous metal, the constant heat/cool cycle fractures a ferrous one, try to get a brass or even maybe a copper "Nut".
