Speedometer, Odometer and Trip Odometer are driven by same circuit. Failure of Odometer and Trip Odometer suggests a circuit board fault on the instrument panel. A used instrument panel or repair of yours is probabaly best options.
The speedometer should malfunction too if speed sensor failed. If only the odometer and trip meter stopped working, it will most likely be the cluster itself. I had this problem, but since took the cluster out and give it a nice tap/knock, put it back in and it has worked since. Keep in mind that the VSS provides signal input to circuit that drives speedometer.
Instrument panel removal is not hard if you follow the shop manual instructions for trim removal. I've done it once on my 2.5TL to replace the D4 light bulb. PM your email address and I'll forward the pdf files for the procedure. The Vehicle Speed Sensor goes into the differential, and is what makes your speedometer and odometers work. If that fails, then your D4 light should start flashing, and either the speedometer will be bouncy or not work at all. Perhaps he forgot that 1Gs have a differential, so he said the tranny, but it's in the diff.
I have to zoom in on this picture of the VSS, but, is it on top, side where on the tranny?I have to zoom in on this picture of the VSS, but, is it on top, side where on the tranny?
See if you can find a specialist to work on cluster and weigh his cost with the cost of replacement. both for a new one or junkyard.Whereas theirs may not work either and generally they will not give you your meney back some places sell you a warranty which only gives you a replacement with another one that doesn't work.
Yes it can be the loose wire.Get the speed sensor checked. Many a times its broken ger in odometer. But that you have checked. Also misaligned gear can cause this .So check the gear alignment in odometer. A tiny motor that spins the odometer gears. Supply power to the motor to see if it spins, first spin it by hand in case a roach has manage to crawl in the space and lodge itself between the gears. Many a times instrument cluster is ok.But there is corrosion deposits on the solder and terminals. This makes odometer non-functional.that the rear of the instrument cluster board has special screws design to be torque to, say, 2 ft-lb. If they're off, your speedo or other displays likely won't work. Another thing is that usually when stepper motors don't run, the problemis with the electronics that drive it rather than with the motor itself. To get more repair and troubleshooting tips on how to repair your odometer and test it. please click on the link belowhttp://www.buzzle.com/articles/odometer-not-working.html Thanks. keep updated for any more query.you can rate this solution and show your appreciation.
Thanks for a good response; even tough I may not be able to do the repair myself your reply does make sense. I took my cluster unitt off the car (Crown Vic) but could only get to a point of visual but no real access. Thanks for a good response; even tough I may not be able to do the repair myself your reply does make sense.
