Doomed? Maybe... It sounds like your set may have suffered from a power supply or system board failure. The only real way to know for sure is to have it checked out by a reputable TV repair person.
If you check in your owner's manual there is a listing of authorized repair centers for your particular set. I would try to get it to one of those service centers since they have been factory trained to repair that brand of television and stand a much better chance of diagnosing the problem correctly the first time rather than someone else who can only replace parts until the unit starts working again....a pretty expensive route to go!
